Wave study of the harbour area of Mola di Bari, Italy - 3D physical model

Description
The wave study of the harbour area of Mola di Bari was carried out using a 3D physical model with a scale 1:50 in Froude similitude .
The model was realized in the basin for coastal dynamic of the Laboratorio di Ricerca e Sperimentazione per la Difesa delle Coste (LIC) of the Technical University of Bari, 90 m long, 50 m wide and 1.20 m deep. The basin is characterized by the presence of a wave maker which enable us to generate waves with different characteristics with a wave front  of 28.80 m.
The model, constructed with a non-erodible bottom, reproduce an area 1,750 m wide and 700 m long, until the isobath -40 m.
In the tests waves from directions N20E and N350E, more dangerous directions for the study of the waves in the harbour basin.
Wave with a return interval of 1 year and 50 years were analyzed. All the generated waves had a spectrum of JONSWAP type.
For each configuration free surface elevations measurements were assessed in 37 points.

This web site was launched by Prof. Michele Mossa of the Polytechnic University of Bari (Italy) with the initial support of Fondazione Caripuglia, Bari, Italy for the Research Project LIC-MON of 2003 and of the Project IMCA (Integrated Monitoring of Coastal Areas) financed by MIUR PON D.M. 593/00. Later, the initiative was supported with other Prof. Michele Mossa’s funds, most recently provided by the RITMARE Project.
